Jesus Is My Hero was the result of singing to myself while driving between service calls sometime between 2006 and 2007. I kept singing the line “Jesus Is My Hero and I’m glad to play this song, because every time life gets me down he helps me get along.” This song stalled for two reasons;
- I could not find lyrics that felt right.
- The music was not coming to me.
The Lyrics I kept singing seemed to fit an old country music style from way back in the 1950’s. I must say that is one style I have a hard time feeling. If you notice the bass line of the chorus changes every time the chorus happens. In the first chorus the bass is mostly whole notes meaning although I used octaves in the first count of the measure, the note itself is just the root note for all 4 counts of that measure. The second chorus bass line is what I call the “boom tat” style used in “Tex Mex” dancing music. And finally I used the walking bass from the older country music. The third chorus happens two times starting with the walking bass then the second time it returns to the “boom tat” style to the end.
But that only covers the chorus. Regarding the verses my first attempt back in 2007 just did not work for me. So in 2021 when I completed Jesus Is My Hero I started over with the verses.
And finally the over all musical song structure just did not fit my style so the song starts and ends with a much more up beat “Jam Session” if you will.
But it is the last words I want to be embraced. “If you call on him he’ll give you a reprieve.” There is always hope. Thank you Jesus.
